Background of the Study
Racial tolerance, as a critical component of social harmony, has become increasingly important in multicultural societies. In Minna LGA, Niger State, religious education is viewed as a significant contributor to shaping students’ attitudes towards racial tolerance. The curriculum, which integrates religious teachings with ethical directives, is designed to promote understanding, respect, and acceptance among diverse racial groups (Olayinka, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024). Historically, religious institutions have played a role in bridging racial divides by emphasizing universal moral values such as compassion, justice, and equality. In the school context, these values are imparted through religious education programs that encourage dialogue and critical reflection on issues related to race and identity (Sani, 2023). The pedagogical approaches often include classroom discussions, interactive activities, and community engagement projects that expose students to diverse cultural perspectives. Recent curricular reforms have further emphasized the need to address racial prejudice and promote tolerance from an early age, linking these initiatives to broader social development goals (Adeyemi, 2024). However, despite these efforts, there remains a gap in understanding the extent to which religious education effectively transforms student attitudes towards racial tolerance. Societal challenges, such as historical tensions and systemic biases, continue to impact the perceptions of young learners, making it imperative to critically evaluate the contribution of religious education in this regard (Bello, 2023). This study intends to examine the influence of religious education on fostering racial tolerance by analyzing curriculum content, teaching methodologies, and the lived experiences of students. Through both qualitative and quantitative research methods, the study will explore how religious teachings are interpreted and internalized by students in Minna LGA, and whether these interpretations translate into more tolerant attitudes towards racial diversity (Umar, 2024). By providing a detailed evaluation of existing practices and identifying areas for improvement, the research aims to contribute to educational strategies that promote racial harmony and social integration in diverse communities.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the well-articulated goals of religious education in promoting racial tolerance, there is evidence of persistent racial bias among students in Minna LGA. Educators have observed that while the curriculum includes messages of equality and respect, these are not always effectively translated into positive attitudes or behaviors towards individuals from different racial backgrounds (Olayinka, 2023). Factors such as entrenched cultural stereotypes, inadequate teacher training, and insufficient emphasis on practical applications of tolerance further compound the problem. The gap between the curriculum’s intended outcomes and the actual attitudes of students is indicative of systemic challenges in curriculum delivery and implementation (Ibrahim, 2024). Additionally, historical and social contexts unique to the region continue to influence student perceptions, making it difficult for religious education alone to overcome deeply rooted prejudices. The lack of comprehensive, localized research on the relationship between religious education and racial tolerance exacerbates the issue, limiting the ability of policymakers to design effective interventions. Therefore, this study aims to critically assess the contribution of religious education to students’ attitudes towards racial tolerance in Minna LGA, identifying key challenges and proposing actionable recommendations for curriculum improvement (Bello, 2023). The research will gather insights from teachers, students, and community leaders to gain a multifaceted understanding of the issue and to explore whether current educational practices are sufficient to foster genuine racial tolerance in a multicultural context.

The research offers a framework for developing educational practices that promote equality and tolerance, thereby supporting long-term societal cohesion (Umar, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to evaluating the impact of religious education on shaping students’ attitudes towards racial tolerance in Minna LGA, Niger State. It focuses on curriculum content, teaching practices, and local socio-cultural influences.
